Great Falls geology hike with Callan Bentley (Sept 16)

Learn about the unique geology of area surrounding the nation’s capital on a hike of the historic Great Falls area with Callan Bentley, DCSWA’s favorite local geologist. Callan will take DCSWA members on an exclusive hike of the Billy Goat Trail in C&O Canal National Historical Park. You’ll do some rock-hopping along the trail and see stunning views of the Potomac River and Mather Gorge while you learn about the rocks that make up Great Falls and how the scenic area formed.

What to bring: Everyone should pack snacks/lunch for the trail, plus 2 liters of water. Bring a good daypack/backpack, good hiking shoes, and dress for the weather.

About your tour guide:
Callan Bentley is an assistant professor of geology at Northern Virginia Community College. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America and President of the Geological Society of Washington. Callan is a contributing editor at EARTH magazine and the Vice President of the Geo2YC division of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. He lives in the Fort Valley of Virginia.
