Professional Development Month: Transitioning to Writing for Podcast and Video

June 9, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Have you ever wondered how science writers and journalists go from print writing to podcasting and video? Join DCSWA for an event to learn about that transition, featuring panelists Joss Fong, Prabarna Ganguly, and Blythe Terrell. Joss, Prabarna, and Blythe will share why they chose to move from one medium to another, how they made it happen, and what they wish they’d known before making that leap. The majority of the panel time will be dedicated to answering questions from the audience.

Joss Fong is a senior editorial producer of the Vox video team. She has written, produced, and directed explainer videos on a range of topics for Vox‘s platforms on YouTube, Facebook, and Netflix. She’s received AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards for video coverage of gene editing and of Covid-19.

Prabarna Ganguly is a neuroscientist and science writer for the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, where she covers all things related to genomics and genetics. She received a 2021 DCSWA Newsbrief Award for her work on the video The Human Pangenome.

Blythe Terrell is editor of the podcast Science Vs that takes on fads and trends using science, to delve into what’s real, what’s not, and what’s somewhere in between. She was previously a senior editor for science and health at FiveThirtyEight.

The panel will run from 7:00‑8:00 pm ET on Wednesday, June 9, and be moderated by DCSWA Treasurer Sam Jones.
