Salary Range: $116,300.00 To $145,300.00 Annually
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Managing Editor manages and oversees the editorial strategy, production, and distribution of key Society news publications, including The Hematologist and ASH News Daily, and is responsible for ensuring that these publications support the Society’s business goals, engage readers, and strengthen the ASH brand. The Senior Managing Editor ensures accurate and cohesive messaging about ASH priorities and makes recommendations for optimal print and electronic distribution strategies, improvements to online user experience, promotional strategies, and development of new revenue streams. The Senior Managing Editor Communications is also responsible for the production of a monthly podcast for The Hematologist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Editorial
- Work with Editors-in-Chief to develop annual and issue-based content plans, and work with editorial board members to generate and deliver new content; help Editors-in-Chief to conceptualize feature article ideas, solicit article ideas from outside authors and ASH staff, and coordinate submission and review of articles and photographs/graphics.
- Manage development of content microsites, podcasts, e-newsletters, video collections, and other new content categories under the umbrella of existing publications as needed.
- Work with Editors-in-Chief to develop agenda and materials for editorial board meetings; ensure appropriate follow-up.
- Write articles as needed; ensure that all published material is factually accurate and adheres to ASH style and the highest editorial standards.
- Represent the Chief Communications Officer as needed at cross-departmental meetings
Production/Operations
- Oversee the digital presence of the publications, including new delivery models.
- Working with marketing team, make recommendations for promoting publications as well as specific editorial content, including recommendations for social media strategy.
- With Editor-in-Chief, develop a production schedule for the year; oversee staff and vendors to ensure that production stays on schedule.
- Oversee layout of The Hematologist and ASH News Daily, manage creation/editing of graphics, production, printing, and distribution of publications, in coordination with vendors; manage the on-site editorial office for ASH News Daily.
- Develop and manage annual budgets; make recommendations for potential cost savings and new revenue streams; monitor revenue and expenses in relation to budget.
- Work with sales team to develop rates, and to identify and deliver advertising and sponsorship opportunities for The Hematologist and ASH News Daily print, e-newsletters, and websites.
- Monitor and make ongoing recommendations for improving the design, format, and frequency of publications, taking into account new technologies and delivery mechanisms.
- Work with survey vendor and Editors-in-Chief to regularly evaluate the success of publications through reader surveys, focus groups, and other means; develops plans to add or modify features as necessary to ensure that publications are valuable, engaging, and well-received by the target audience.
- Identify new Editors-in-Chief of publications, and work with them to recruit and appoint their respective editorial boards; work closely with staff and volunteers on the Editor Search Committee to identify and recruit an ongoing pipeline of new candidates; work with Executive Office and IT to develop, implement, and maintain an online application system for interested candidates, and other ongoing process improvement initiatives.
- Ensure that the Committee on Communications is informed about the performance of and any issues related to the publications; attend meetings and provide reports as needed.
- Oversee production and delivery of Hematopoiesis (a microsite and e-newsletter designed for trainees by the ASH Trainee Council); review content and make suggestions for usability, working with web team.
- May supervise multiple direct reports.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS REQUIRED
- College degree. A minimum of seven years’ work experience on a similar publication.
- Experience with medical/science writing and editing preferred.
- Experience with managing both desktop publishing and XML workflows required.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks in an active work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including professionalism and ability to work well with the ASH leadership.

- Ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
- May require some out-of-town work travel.
