HOW: Communicating Science on Social Media in 7 seconds, 140 characters, and a GIF

How do you get people to click on your story about climate change only using 140 characters and no cat videos? How do you communicate the importance of the gravitational waves discovery in 7 seconds? NASA Goddard social media lead Aries Keck (and past DCSWA president!) will be leading July’s Hands-On Workshop (HOW) on communicating science through social media.
Participants can expect to learn:
– which material tends to work better on the various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, Tumblr, YouTube) with examples showing success and failure
– “secrets” of the algorithms for Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube so you can get the most out of your social media post
– storyboarding in a social media context so you can have a stellar SnapChat story, successful Facebook live video chat, shareable GIF, etc.
Aries will also help attendees storyboard their own ideas for a social media post and provide instructions and feedback on how to execute or improve the idea. Attendees are welcome bring their own questions or e-mail topics they would like to discuss ahead of time.
Please note this HOW is not an introduction to a social media platform. Attendees should have a working knowledge of the major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, and YouTube.
