Website American Chemical Society
Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) produces authoritative, award-winning journalism about the world of chemistry, including coverage of drug development, new materials for electronics, and solutions to climate change. C&EN’s weekly magazine is sent digitally and in print to the 150,000 members of the American Chemical Society, serving professional chemists in academia, industry, government, and education. The website receives about 6 million page views per year.
C&EN seeks a science-writing intern for 2025. During a paid, 6-month fellowship (starting around June), the intern is expected to work for C&EN full time (40 hours/week). The editorial fellow is strongly encouraged to work from our Washington, DC, headquarters.
Description:
C&EN covers current events in the world of chemistry, including cutting-edge molecular science, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. The editorial fellow will work alongside seasoned reporters and will be actively mentored by C&EN staff. They will write bylined news and feature stories for C&EN’s online site and weekly print magazine. The editorial fellow will also have the opportunity to write cover stories (past fellows have reported on topics such as the search for signs of extraterrestrial life and the metabolic effects of fermented foods), produce an episode of our podcast (such as this intern’s audio story about repairing the ozone hole), and help produce videos and graphics. The pay is about $20 per hour.
How to apply:
Candidates should be highly motivated students or recent graduates with demonstrated interest in science writing and at least a bachelor’s degree in some area of science. Editorial fellows should be prepared to report and write on daily and weekly deadlines.
We encourage candidates from underrepresented identities to apply. For past interns, our fellowship has been a first step into a long career in science journalism—and we recognize that science journalism needs to increase its inclusion of people from underrepresented groups.
Please send a cover letter, resume, and 3 science-writing samples to our team of editors at CEN_fellow@acs.org. Strong applications will include samples written in a journalistic style and will demonstrate a flair for reporting complex science stories in an accessible manner. We encourage applicants to include additional multimedia samples if available.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 28, 2025. C&EN plans to make a decision in March.
