Behind-the-Scenes Preservation Tour at the Library of Congress– 3/24/17 @10am

The Library of Congress is welcoming DCSWA members for a behind-the-scenes look at the techniques and technology scientists and conservators use to preserve the collections of the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. The tour will cover various analytical and testing methods for research and treatment, as well as the chemistry behind neutralization of acidic paper in bulk. Cameras are allowed on this two-hour tour, but visitors are discouraged from bringing large bags and unnecessary personal items.
  • Date/time: March 24, 201710 am – 12 pm
  • Location: Library of Congress, James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave SE (entrance near the Metro is on 1st St and C St SE. Diagonally across the exit of the Capitol South Metro Station on the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines.)
  • Registration link: $5 deposit, will be returned after you attend the event

Please allow adequate time to pass through building security, which consists of walking through a metal detector and putting all bags and pocket contents through an x-ray machine. Additionally, after the first stop on the tour, all bags and coats will need to be left in a secure, but open area in the Preservation office. Visitors should plan to be on their feet for the entire tour.
